Gary Speed actually replaced John Toshack to become the manager of the Wales national team.  After Wales dropped to below #100 on the FIFA rankings list, the national team played much better under the leadership of Speed and managed to enter the top 50 of the ranking.  However, over the weekend, Gary Speed was found dead in his home.

John Toshack released the following statement to FFM's website about the death of Gary Speed:

Like the rest of the footballing world, I was also sad to hear the news about the death of Gary Speed, the manager of the Wales national football team.  I send my sympathies and condolences to the family of Gary Speed, the football association of Wales, along with the entire football community.  I, along with the FFM president and general secretary, like Gary Speed, were present at the recent meeting in Brussels where we were looking to reach an agreement on the schedule for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers and we had good and constructive cooperation during that time.  When the time came for lunch, after the meeting concluded, we had a long talk about the situation and perspective of the Wales national team and I must say that I did not see any sign that would suggest something like this could happen.  I was very shocked when I learned about his tragic death.

Gary Speed has never played for me, neither for a club nor in the national team, but I must say that he had an outstanding footballing career and his coaching career was headed in the same direction.  This is a very big loss, first for his family, then for the football association of Wales and his fans.

Once again, I send my deepest sympathies and condolences to his family, the FA of Wales, and his fans.
