Vardar failed to get something more of the home game against Dinamo Zagreb in the first leg of the CL 2nd qualifying round despite the numerous chances. In the end, Dinamo celebrated a 1:2 win in a match where the experience was one of the most important factors.

Sedloski decided to field both youngsters Petkovski and Asani in the starting 11 and left the new signings Obregon and Jonathan Balotelli on the bench. Both Petkovski and Asani had chances in the opening minutes but it was Dinamo who opened the scoreline first. Algerian international Soudani sent a cross from the right in the 20th minute and instead of clearing the ball Vardar defender Mijuskovic sent it into his own net. 10 minutes later it was already 0:2 and all seemed lost for Vardar. Once again Soudani was the creator of the goal, this time Rog the finisher. Before the half-time Petkovski had an excellent opportunity but his shot hit the post.

In the second period Sedloski introduced Velkovski instead of Gligorov and Jonathan Balotelli on the place of Petkovski. In the 55th minute Vardar pulled one back and brought hope to the home fans. Hovhannes Hambardzumyan assisted, Juan Felipe scored and Vardar was back within a reach. Still, that turned out to be the final result, but not the last exciting moments. In the 82nd minute Balotelli also hit the post, while Kojasevic hit the bar in the 90th minute.

In the end, it seemed like Vardar was missing football fortune or Dinamo is experienced enough to play just as much as they need to in the first match of the new and long season. The second leg is scheduled for 20th of July in Zagreb
